Rome Sights, Sounds and Hotels
The Basilica di San Clemente (Basilica of St. Clement) derives its name from St. Clement, the Bishop of Rome for 5 years from 95 AD, who’s famous letter to Corinth is the oldest Christian writing after the New Testament. This 12th century church at street level was built over a 4th century church after Normans destroyed the lower church which was built over a secular house from the 1st century where there was a pagan temple which was dedicated to Mithras, god of the sun. The foundations are considered to date from the time of the Republic, and a new façade was constructed in the seventeenth century. You will find many ancient relics including frescoes from the 9th to the 11th centuries.
