Amsterdam Sights, Sounds and Hotels

Built in the late 14th century the church consecrated as the Church of Our Lady or St Catharine’s Church, would never be known with its given name, only as De Nieuwe Kerk, (The New Church) to distinguish it from De Oude Kerk, (The Old Church) which the ever increasing population had outgrown. With an unfortunate history of catching fire, no less than three times, very little remains of the original, but the church was restored after a devastating fire in 1643 when a new pulpit, brass choir screen and an immense organ were installed. Further additions and adornments followed over the years, including the stained-glass windows and window of Remembrance. Today the church is famous for the exhibitions it holds of treasures and artefacts of distant land’s cultures and religions.
